World Vegan Day
Every year, we celebrate World Vegan Day on November 1st. The day was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, animal rights activist and former president of the Vegan Society, which was founded back in 1944. The aim then is the same as it is today: to encourage people to eat more plants and fewer animal products.
Why go vegan?
There are a number of reasons why someone might choose to go vegan. For many, the priority is to preserve animal rights and prevent the cruelty that prevails in the meat and dairy industries.
This is often connected to environmental reasons. Avoiding animal products is one of the most effective things you can do to help the environment and lower your carbon footprint. For instance, one bar of H!P has a carbon footprint over 50% lower than an equivalent chocolate bar made with dairy milk. Vast amounts of water and energy are used in meat production, and this results in widespread pollution, deforestation and contamination, all of which have a damaging impact on our planet.
For some, following a plant-based diet is a way to ensure that they eat enough healthy fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, beans and legumes. Vegan junk food definitely exists, but eating more plants can lead to a healthier lifestyle.
If you’re thinking about going vegan, we always recommend that you do your research first! Find out the best sources of protein, fibre, healthy fats and carbohydrates before you make the switch so you can feel your best.
Being vegan doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your favourite foods and sweet treats. There are plenty of meat alternatives out there that taste just as good (if not better) than the real thing - H!P Chocolate is just one example - but have a far lower carbon footprint.
Vegan Celebs
Veganism and plant-based lifestyles are increasing worldwide, and if you need any inspiration, there are loads of celebrities and athletes who swear by their plant-based diets.
